NDIS reforms fuel positive participant outcomes and continued Scheme stabilisation

  • by

The latest NDIS Quarterly Report (as of June 30, 2024) highlights positive trends in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), showing improved outcomes for participants, families, and carers, alongside signs of cost stabilisation. Key findings on NDIS reforms include:

  • Employment: Over 52% of families and carers reported paid employment, surpassing the 2023-24 target of 50%.
  • Participant Empowerment: 76% of participants aged 15 or older felt the NDIS helped them have more choice and control, exceeding the target of 75%.
  • Community Participation: Increased engagement in social and community activities by participants as a result of the NDIS reforms.
  • First Nations Involvement: Of the 14,000 new participants this quarter, 9.9% were First Nations people.

NDIA CEO Rebecca Falkingham attributed these improvements to ongoing reform initiatives funded by significant budget allocations in 2023-24 and 2024-25. The report also noted a $600 million reduction in expenses compared to budget estimates. This indicates a continued trend of stabilising plan inflation, and fewer participants at risk of overspending.

Additionally, the NDIA is addressing delays in service delivery by increasing frontline staff and enhancing the National Contact Centre. Key initiatives announced this quarter include:

  • a $10.7 million funding boost for Disability Representative and Career Organisations (DRCOs) and
  • a co-design approach to NDIS reforms involving key stakeholders and the disability community.

The report reflects ongoing efforts to ensure the NDIS is sustainable while prioritising the needs and voices of people with disabilities.
